Everything You Need to Know about Instagram Lite

Tons of images and videos, gifs, and IGTVs require a great Internet connection, and if that's not always the case, you may have issues with seeing the content. This is why Instagram has come up with a lighter version of their super popular app – Instagram Lite. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is Instagram Lite?

Instagram Lite was first published in March 2018, and its main purpose was to make the app more accessible to users with low internet connection and without much storage space on their phones. The app was pulled from the App Store in 2020, and it was relaunched in March 2021.

Basically, it’s a version of Instagram that only takes up 2MB of storage space on your phone. It allows sending messages, sharing and viewing videos, images, Stories, and IGTVs and using the dark mode. You are also able to view Reels, but it’s still not possible to create them (though the team from Instagram is working on it). However, you can’t use Reels, video filters, and advertising. Apart from that, the Lite version looks exactly the same as the regular one.

Who Can Use Instagram Lite?

Currently, it’s present in 170 countries all over the world, primarily Africa, Asia and South America, but it will soon be available in the USA and UK too.

Is it worth the try? Well, if you often notice a lag while watching videos on Instagram or if the images take too long to download and show, then it’s definitely worth it. If not – you can stick with the original app.

What Does it Mean for Businesses?

Since IG Lite doesn't support ads (which is one of the greatest benefits that its users mention), marketers should focus their strategies back on building communities and increasing engagement. It all comes down to creating a profile that your audience would love to follow.

It will be interesting to see how many users will switch to IG Lite because there are no ads, once it becomes available globally - in the meantime, start thinking about what you can do additionally about your content that would make it more appealing to your followers.
